The sustainable Boschrivier Farm & Stables offer a range of homegorwn produce: pasture fed pigs, free range eggs, vegetables, manure and more!

Boschrivier Farm & Stables is a sustainable effort: we offer pasture-fed pigs, free range eggs and homegrown produce.

We grow our fruit, herbs and vegetables organically and any excess veggies go to our pigs or chickens (that thank us with fresh eggs daily), or we process it into scrumptious bottled fare. At the kiosk where our horse trails start (open during lessons or outrides, or by prior arrangement with cottage guests), we sell fire wood, horse manure, nursery plants and you can even spoil yourself to a cup of coffee and preserves on sale here, while you wait for a lesson or outride to conclude.

Pasture-fed Pigs

Pasture-fed, free-range pigs are in rotated camps and eat grazing, organic vegetables and home-mixed grain.

Our pigs are free range & pasture-fed. Their meat has distinct marbling of fat throughout, making every cut tender and succulent. They enjoy an ideal farm range to make the happiest of hogs. Read more below...

Homegrown Vegetables

We grow our fruit and vegetables organically for own use, to sell, to feed our free-range chickens and pigs and to produce delicious bottled fare.

We grow fruit, herbs and vegetables according to permaculture principles, using composted manure & organic pest control. Excess produce go to the free-range pigs & chickens, or is processed into yummy preserves.

Nursery & Kiosk

Boschrivier's fire wood, home-grown produce, free-range eggs, nursery trees and even manure, can be purchased from our kiosk when it's open (during lessons or outrides).

We have a herb nursery at our kiosk which includes some creepers and indigenous trees. Have a coffee while you wait. You can also buy fire wood, manure, free-range eggs, jams or preserves.

Boschrivier Pasture-fed Piggery

The pasture-fed pigs at Boschrivier Farm are in the truest sense of the word, free-range.

We strive to give our pigs as close to a natural life as possible in a farming setup. We provide our pigs, breeding stock and piglets alike with predominantly pasture as food source. They forage and graze on vegetation which gets re-sowed regularly into their camps. Diet is supplemented with a home-made grain mix to ensure they get everything they need, and they have plenty fresh water for drinking.

Pasture rotation is very important to us as pigs are quite destructive. Moving the pigs between camps ensure pasture recovery and keeps parasite load low. All the camps provide mud wallows to meet all their piggie needs. We use natural herbs to get rid of parasites in our pigs. Manure gets collected, rested and are used as compost in our permaculture gardens.

Our friendly breeding Boar is a pedigree Duroc called Bilbo. Our breeding sows are a Sandveld/Euroboar cross: they are extremely hardy and love living outside. The sows move into separate camps close to furrowing and are left to build their nests for their young. We provide them with furrow huts with straw bedding to make the birthing process as comfortable as possible. Youngsters are weaned around 4 weeks after birth or whenever the moms decide they've had enough of the pushing and shoving.

Our pigs do not receive any injections, we don't castrate our pigs or dock their tails as done in commercial operations. We simply let them be pigs. We separate the boars and sows at a certain age to prevent the meat of the male pigs getting boar taint (a strong smell in the meat, which is caused by hormones in male pigs once they've started mating).

The meat from our pigs is dark in colour and has a distinct marbling of fat throughout, making every cut tender and succulent, whichever way it's prepared. The pork meat is of excellent quality and very well suited for charcuterie, hams, sausages and other products made on the farm.

Boschrivier's free-range eggs are yet another perk of visiting here.

Boschrivier Farm's nursery is only open when the kiosk is open, i.e. during outrides and horse riding lessons.

"The Boschrivier Kiosk is set on the river's edge and is a peaceful place to sit and enjoy a coffee, or to browse the nursery while waiting. I loved being shown the permaculture vegetable garden and the very well taken care of pigs. When given a choice, I'd rather support a sustainable endeavour like this!" - Horse-riding Mom
